Study Skills and Tutoring

In addition to the resources offered through the reference library and workshops, CARC, the Bureau of Study Counsel, and the Extension School offer the following study-skills services.

Learning and Study Skills Inventory (LASSI). This online study-skills-assessment program is designed to help students determine the strengths and weaknesses of their learning and study practices. Access to LASSI is via online services.

Becoming a Strategic Learner (BSL). BSL, an online study-skills tutorial, provides guidelines for improving motivation, concentration, time management, and test-taking. Access to BSL is via online services.

Reading and study strategies. The Bureau of Study Counsel (BSC) offers a reading and study strategies course that allows students to explore skills to help them read with increased speed and comprehension. There are four sessions, and each includes 14 class meetings. The fee is $150. For more information, students should call (617) 495-2581.

The Extension School offers a noncresdit study-skills course, STSK E-105 Learning Styles and Compensatory Strategies, designed to build students’ competence and confidence as learners.

Tutoring. The Extension School offers the services of writing and math tutors through the Writing Center and Math Question Center. For other subjects, contact your teaching fellow or instructor. Also, Harvard College students advertise pay-by-the-hour tutoring services at the Harvard Student Employment Office and Harvard Student Agencies. We also encourage you to start a study group to learn together with your fellow students. See the study-group information sheet (below) for more details.
